NDSU Men’s Golf Second After Day One of Summit League Championships

MESA, Ariz. – North Dakota State men’s golf sits in second place after the opening round of the Summit League Championships, posting a +3 round of 287 at the par 71 Longbow Golf Course.
 
The Bison sit eight shots behind leader South Dakota State (-5) for the overall lead. Oral Roberts (+4), South Dakota (+5) and Omaha (+7) round out the top five of the 11-team field.
 
Ian Simonich and Max Wilson led the Bison on day one, as the duo carded even-par rounds of 71 to begin the three-day event. Wilson had just one birdie with four bogeys over the first 14 holes of the day, falling back to +3, but the redshirt freshman recovered over the final four holes, recording birdies at 15, 17 and 18 to pull three strokes back and finish the opening round at even, sitting in a tie for eighth overall.
 
Simonich opened up with a par, birdie, par start to go -1, but fell to +2 after bogeys on four, five and seven. The senior traded two birdies, pars and bogeys to remain at -2 headed into the final five holes, but birdied 14 and 17 to climb back up the leaderboard and finish with an opening round 71.
 
Rylin Petry finished third for the Bison on the opening day. After being named the Scholar of the Championship to begin the day, Petry began his day with eight pars and a bogey on the front nine. After making the turn, Petry carded his first birdie on 10 and then erased a bogey on 12 with another birdie on 13. Following four pars, the junior bogeyed 18 to finish the day with a +1 round of 72, in a tie for 12^th.
 
Josh Galvin and Jake Skarperud wrapped up the day for the Bison, as the duo shot +2 rounds of 73 to sit in a tie for 16^th in the 55-golfer field. Galvin recorded three birdies on the front nine and sat at -2 at the turn, but had five bogeys and just one birdie over the final seven holes to fall back. Skarperud recorded three birdies on the day, including two on the front nine.
 
The Bison are set to begin day two of the Summit League Championship Monday morning, with NDSU in the lead pairings set to tee off between 9 a.m. CT and 9:40 a.m. CT on hole one.
