MINNEAPOLIS – The North Dakota State baseball team came up short at Minnesota, 9-2, on Tuesday night at Siebert Field.
Davis Hamilton started the scoring getting home on a bases-loaded walk in the opening inning to grab the 1-0 edge. Easton Richter answered for the Gophers (17-17, 5-10 B1G) to steal the lead with a two-run home run to make the score 2-1 after the first inning. Kris Hokenson then extended the Minnesota advantage to 6-1 in the third after he connected on a grand slam.
After the Gophers added a pair of runs in the fourth, Hamilton tried to spark the Bison (12-20, 9-5 Summit) with his second home run in the last three games to cut the deficit to 8-2 in the fifth inning. However, Minnesota went on to hold off NDSU the rest of the way to secure the 9-2 win.
The Bison totaled eight hits as a team with Hamilton going 2-of-4 at the plate with two runs and one RBI, while Colten Becker also added two hits on four appearances.
NDSU combined to use seven different pitchers with Leland Wilson (0-1) making his first start of the season and tossing one strikeout over 2.0 innings.
The Bison will be back in action hosting Northern Colorado for a three-game series on Thursday and Friday night at 6:30 p.m. The series finale has been moved up to 12:00 p.m., on Saturday at Newman Outdoor Field.
