TULSA, Okla. – The North Dakota State baseball team erased an early four-run deficit before falling short in the series finale against Oral Roberts, 9-6, on Sunday afternoon at Chapman Park.
The Golden Eagles (12-6, 1-2 Summit) quickly opened up a 4-0 advantage in the first inning following back-to-back home runs from Wailele Kane-Yates and Jack Schark. The Bison (4-14, 2-1 Summit), who won the first two games of the series, responded with five runs on five hits in the second inning after Tommy Simon, Jake Schaffner and Dante Smith each connected on an RBI single to cut the edge to 4-3. Colten Becker capped the big frame with a two RBI single through the right side to steal the lead, 5-4, in the second inning.
Oral Roberts retaliated with five unanswered runs, including three in the third inning to open up a 9-5 advantage through six complete. The contest then went scoreless until Kyle Law reached on a fielder’s choice in the ninth to score Davis Hamilton, but the Bison couldn’t get anything going the rest of the way and dropped the series finale, 9-6.
NDSU tallied 11 hits as team with Sam Canton connecting on a career-best four hits on five appearances at the plate with one run, while Schaffner and Simon also notched two hits each.
The Bison used six pitchers with Matt Sargeant making the start tossing two strikeouts over 2.0 innings. Austin Bergum (0-1) picked up the loss appearing for 1.1 frames out of the bullpen and Skyler Riedinger posted a team-best three strikeouts over 1.0 innings.
NDSU will be back in action on Tuesday night at Oklahoma State. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
