Wihlm Tosses One Hitter as NDSU Softball Tops Maryland Eastern Shore

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – North Dakota State softball picked up a win in its only game on day two of the Golden Eagle Classic, defeating Maryland Eastern Shore 8-0 at the University of Southern Miss Softball Complex. Madison Wihlm tossed her first career shutout and allowed just one hit in the victory.
 
Along with her first career shutout, Wihlm recorded her first one-hitter, as she held the Hawks scoreless over six innings. She recorded four strikeouts and allowed three walks in the win. The lone hit came in the leadoff spot to begin the sixth inning.
 
The Bison jumped out to an early lead, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a commanding lead and never looked back. After NDSU loaded the bases, Jasmyn Yessian recorded a walk to bring across the first run and then Savannah Henzler hit a sacrifice fly for the second run of the inning.
 
After the Bison loaded the bases again, Chloe Woldruff hit an infield single to score a third run and Macy Fry followed it up with another Bison RBI on a walk. Lileigh Nieto would cap the inning’s runs with a sacrifice fly.
 
Nieto added another RBI in the third with a groundout and Bella Dean would extend NDSU’s lead to 7-0 with a single in the fourth to score Star Cortez. The Bison would secure the win in the bottom of the sixth inning with a bunt single from Yessian to score Cortez from third to trigger the run-rule victory.
 
Cortez led the Bison at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a stolen base and three runs scored. Yessian and Nieto finished with two RBI each.
 
The Bison wrap up the Golden Eagle Classic on Sunday, taking on Maryland-Eastern Shore at 10 a.m., before a 12:30 p.m. match up against Southern Miss at the University of Southern Miss Softball Complex.
