NDSU Women’s Basketball Tops Omaha on Senior Day, 76-59

FARGO, N.D. – Avery Koenen netted a career-high 30 points to help lift the North Dakota State women’s basketball team past Omaha, 76-59, on Saturday afternoon inside the Scheels Center at the Sanford Health Athletic Complex.

With the win, the Bison finish the regular season with a 19-10 (11-5 Summit) overall record and will be the third seed in the Summit League Championship. The Bison will face sixth-seeded Kansas City on Friday in Sioux Falls at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center. Game time is set for 25 minutes after St. Thomas and North Dakota conclude.

Avery Koenen posted her fourth 20-point game in the last five with a career-best 30 points on 13-of-20 shooting from the field. The Montevideo, Minn., native also tied a season-best 14 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season. Abby Schulte netted a season-high 14 points to surpass the 1,000 career points mark with 1,013 over five seasons.

As a team, the Bison shot 45.8 percent from the field (27-59) and 80.0 percent (20-25) from the free throw line. NDSU netted 46 points in the paint and the bench added in 47 points. The Bison also hauled in a season-best 47 rebounds with 10 different players grabbing at least one.

After leading at the half, 30-26, the Bison used a 13-2 run in the third quarter to stretch their lead into double digits, 43-32, with a layup from Koenen at the 3:03 mark. The Bison then closed out the third frame with six straight points to open up their largest lead of the game, 53-35, with a pair of free throws from Claire Stern. The Mavericks (13-16, 5-11 Summit) made one final surge in the fourth with a 6-0 run of their own to pull back within eight, 56-49, following a layup from Alana Powell with 6:24 remaining. However, NDSU held off Omaha the rest of the way to secure the 76-59 win.
