NDSU Baseball Drops Season Opener at No. 21 Dallas Baptist

DALLAS – The North Dakota State baseball team dropped an 11-6 decision on opening day at No. 21 Dallas Baptist on Friday afternoon in rainy conditions.

After the Patriots (1-0) plated five runs in the first inning, Davis Hamilton sparked the Bison (0-1) with a two-run double to make the score 5-2 in the third frame. NDSU added one more run on an error in the fifth before Dallas Baptist, who advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season, scored five answered runs to extend its lead to 10-3 through seven complete. Alex Urlaub attempted to get a late rally going in his Bison debut with a three-run home run to left field to make the score 10-6 in the eighth. However, the Patriots held off the Bison the rest of the way for the 11-6 win.

Hamilton led the way for NDSU going 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI, while Jake Schaffner also contributed two hits on five appearances with one run.

Nolan Johnson (0-1) made the start on the mound tossing four strikeouts over 4.0 innings. Landon Koenig tallied one strikeout over 2.0 innings in relief and Austin Bergum finished out the final 2.0 innings with two strikeouts.

NDSU will continue its series at Dallas Baptist tomorrow. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
