Fast Start Pushes NDSU Women’s Basketball Past Denver, 69-59

FARGO, N.D. – Four Bison reached double digits in scoring as the North Dakota State women’s basketball team topped Denver, 69-59, and earned its fourth straight win on Thursday night at Scheels Center.

Avery Koenen posted double figures in scoring for the third straight game with a team-high 14 points to go along with seven rebounds and two assists. Abbie Draper hauled in a team-best eight rebounds with 12 points, while Abby Schulte netted 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field. She also tied Emily Dietz (2017-22) on the NDSU all-time games played list with 131 career games. Marisa Frost closed out the group with 10 points off the bench.

As a team, the Bison shot 40.4 percent (21-52) from the field and 79.3 percent (23-29) from the free throw line with eight different players in the scoring column. NDSU also grabbed 36 rebounds in comparison to Denver’s 22.

NDSU (10-5, 2-0 Summit) got off to a fast start with back-to-back buckets from Schulte and then two triples from Abby Krzewinski to make the score 10-2 at the 7:08 mark in the first quarter. The Bison then pushed their lead to 23-10 with another triple from Draper to make the score, 23-13, with 8:30 to play in the half. The Bison, who shot over 55 percent from the field in the first half, opened up their largest lead of the game, 45-22, at the half. NDSU never trailed in the contest and went on to hold off Denver (7-9, 0-3 Summit) over the final two quarters to earn the 69-59 victory.

The Bison will be back in action hosting Oral Roberts on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 12:00 p.m., at Scheels Center.
