CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – North Dakota State wrestling’s Kyle Burwick and Max Petersen reached the semifinals on day one of the 2025 Southern Scuffle on Saturday, hosted by the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga at McKenzie Arena.
Burwick dominated early and went 4-0 in his quarter of the 133-pound bracket, including an upset over #25 Blake Boarman of Chattanooga to punch his ticket in the semis. Burwick started with three bonus point wins, including a pair of shutout major decisions and a tech fall, before securing a reversal in the tiebreaker round to help defeat Boarman.
Petersen recorded three wins on Saturday to reach the semis in the 157-pound bracket. Petersen started off with a major decision and added two other wins, including a come-from-behind 11-4 win over Michael Gioffre of Virginia to remain in the championship bracket headed into the final day on Sunday.
Six of the 12 Bison earned placing finishes on the day, with four other Bison working through the consolation bracket to make it to day two and secure a top-8 finish. Aidan Brenot overcame a setback in his first match, winning five-straight matches to reach day two. After losing his 184-pound opener in a 2-1 tiebreaker decision, Brenot reeled off a tech fall and two pins early in the consolation bracket. After another win, Brenot moved to the final day with an upset win over #16 Gavin Kane of North Carolina, winning 4-2.
Boeden Greenley and Devin Wasley overcame losses to ranked opposition on Saturday. Greenley fell to #28 Tate Picklo in the 165-pound quarterfinals, but responded with a shutout 6-0 win over Virginia’s Mason Stefanelli to advance into the placing rounds. Wasley fell to #33 Sergio Desiante of Chattanooga in his second match, but responded with a pair of major decisions and a tech fall to move on to Sunday in the 174-pound bracket.
Gabriel Schumm also reached the placing rounds in the 157-pound bracket, overcoming a second-round loss with three-straight wins.
As a team, the Bison sit in a tie for sixth overall in the 23-team field, sitting on 62 points.
Matches will resume Sunday morning, running throughout the day beginning at 10 a.m. The finals start at 3 p.m.
