FARGO, N.D. – After the first two games of the series were canceled due to rain, the North Dakota State baseball team closed out regular season play with a 12-2 run-rule win over Omaha on Saturday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field.
With the win, the Bison clinched the second seed in the Summit League Championship and finished the regular season with a 17-31 (13-15 Summit) overall record. NDSU will face third-seeded Omaha (19-28, 12-16 Summit) in the first round of the Summit League Championship on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m., at Tal Anderson Field in Omaha, Neb.
The Bison quickly opened up a 4-0 advantage after Dante Smith sent a two RBI single into right field in the second inning. After Omaha plated a run in the top half of fourth, Davis Hamilton scored on a throwing error to push the lead to 5-1 after four innings.
Omaha cut the deficit to 5-2 with an RBI triple off the bat of Tyler Palmer in the fifth inning. NDSU then cracked the game open scoring six runs on five hits in the sixth to increase its lead to 11-2 after Luis Garcia connected on his first career two RBI triple down the right line. Sam Canton sealed the 12-2 run-rule victory in the seventh after he delivered an RBI single to right field to close out the contest.
The Bison tied a season-high 11 RBI, 12 runs and 16 hits as a team with five different players logging multiple hit games. Hamilton paced NDSU going 4-of-5 at the plate with two runs and one RBI. Smith also contributed three hits with two RBI and two runs.
The Bison combined to use five different pitchers with Leland Wilson (1-3) earning the win after tossing a season-high four strikeouts with no walks or runs over 2.0 innings. Garrett Shupe also contributed two strikeouts over 1.0 innings.
