Former North Dakota State NCAA champion thrower Payton Otterdahl will compete for Team USA at the World Athletics Championships this Saturday, Sept. 13, in Tokyo, Japan.
Otterdahl took second place in the shot put at the USATF Outdoor Championships on Aug. 3 to automatically qualify for the World Championships.
Otterdahl, 29, stands at No. 4 in the world this year for the shot put with his mark of 73-4 (22.35m).
The men’s shot put qualification round will be held at 10:55 a.m. in Tokyo on Saturday morning (8:55 p.m. CT on Friday night). The shot put final is scheduled for 9:10 p.m. Saturday in Tokyo, which is 7:10 a.m. Saturday in Central time.
Otterdahl competed for NDSU from 2015-19, setting the collegiate indoor shot put record and winning NCAA indoor titles in the shot put and weight throw in 2019. A two-time Olympian, Otterdahl finished fifth in the shot put at the 2023 World Championships before placing fourth at the Paris Olympic Games in 2024.
