WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – North Dakota State men’s golf and Rylin Petry claimed tournament victories on Tuesday in the season-opening Metropolis Intercollegiate at Metropolis Country Club.
Petry (69-70-72 – 211) picked up his first career collegiate win, as he defeated Alejandro Formosa of Columbia by one shot in the individual competition. Petry entered the day tied for the tournament lead and fired a 72 over the final 18 holes to lead the way for the Bison on the day and also hold off Formosa by one shot, as well as KC Nikel (Siena) and Elias Weidmann (St. John’s) by two shots.
Petry carded one birdie in the final round and nine overall for the event, which led the Bison. Petry also had 35 pars over three rounds.
Head coach Dr. Ekren Miller also picked up his first win as Bison head coach, in his coaching debut with NDSU, as the Bison (+27) claimed the top spot in the team competition. Miller becomes the fourth Bison men’s golf head coach, and first in the Division I era, to win in their debut and the first since Matt Johnson in 2001.
NDSU entered the final round in second and finished tied with Richmond (+27) at the top after 54 holes, but the Bison claimed team title honors by winning the tiebreaker over Richmond. Siena (+35), who led after day one, took third overall in the 15-team field.
Freshman Carter White (73-76-73 – 222) and seniors Jake Skarperud (79-74-73 – 226) and Gabe Benson (69-75-75 – 219) captured the other scoring rounds for the Bison on Tuesday. White and Skarperud each carded rounds of 73. White had two birdies on the day and seven overall for the tournament as he finished in a tie for 22nd overall in his Bison debut.
Skarperud carded 14 pars and a birdie in his final round on Tuesday. He finished with six birdies overall for the event and climbed 20 spots on the final day to finish in a tie for 35th in the 84-golfer field.
Benson had three birdies on the day to carded a final round score of 75. Benson led the Bison with 10 birdies in the tournament and also had an eagle, as he finished second for the Bison in the event at 14th overall.
Max Wilson (71-73-77 – 221) and Andrew Ballou (70-72-78 – 220) rounded out the day for the Bison. Wilson had one birdie in the round and six overall for the tournament, as he finished in 21st overall. His final round of 77 helped win the tiebreaker for NDSU in the team competition.
Ballou, who played the tournament as an individual, wrapped up his Bison debut with a birdie in the final round and four for the tournament, as he placed inside the top 20 in a tie for 17th overall, third best overall for the Bison finishers. Ballou led the Bison with 36 pars on the weekend.
Tuesday’s win is the first season-opening tournament win for NDSU since claiming the Omaha Invitational in September of 2017. It is also the first win for the Bison since last October when NDSU claimed the Monterrey Collegiate Classic.
The Bison will return to action next week at the Blue Jay Invitational on September 15-16. The Creighton-hosted event will be held at the Shadow Ridge Country Club in Omaha, Nebraska.
