2025 NFL TRAINING CAMP NEWS (7/29)
ROME ODUNZE FANTASY BREAKOUT COMIN’
Don’t let Rome Odunze’s quiet rookie year fool you because the breakout could be right around the corner.
New Bears head coach Ben Johnson isn’t exactly known for tossing out compliments. Just ask Luther Burden, who’s been getting tough love since he was drafted, or even Caleb Williams, who’s felt the heat himself. But Odunze? He’s one of the few players Johnson’s actually gone out of his way to praise, and that’s notable.
After being taken in the first round last year and failing to make much of a fantasy impact, Odunze is back in the spotlight and drawing rave reviews for his work as the team’s potential go-to “X” receiver.
Johnson specifically highlighted Odunze’s ability to win on the outside in one-on-one matchups, calling him a “really detailed route runner” with the kind of flexibility that can open up the Bears’ entire offense. From slants and stops to go balls and everything in between, Odunze has the complete perimeter route tree in his bag.
Johnson also talked up his ability to win contested catches while still having the sharpness and suddenness to break off routes underneath. That’s the type of skill set that can make noise in fantasy, especially with opposing defenses focused on several weapons, such as DJ Moore.
If training camp buzz holds up, Odunze is the perfect post-hype sleeper to stash in all formats and someone who could win you a few weeks in Best Ball.
JONES & MASON COMMITTEE IN MINNESOTA
Jordan Mason is officially in the mix in Minnesota, and the Vikings aren’t hiding their intention to lighten Aaron Jones’ workload in 2025. After riding Jones into the ground last year with career highs in touches, carries, snaps, and rushing yards at age 30, the team brought in Mason via trade from the 49ers and immediately started preaching a backfield rotation.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell has typically leaned on a lead back for about two-thirds of the snaps, but early signs from camp suggest a much closer split between Jones and Mason this season. While O’Connell, Jones, and Mason all kept things vague in interviews, dropping quotes like “I’m not sure,” and “it’s going to roll how it’s going to roll,” the eye test from practices points toward a true committee.
Mason’s stock is quietly rising, especially with coaches hyping up his pass-catching ability, an area he didn’t get to show off much in San Francisco. Whether that’s just smoke or a real sign of an expanded role remains to be seen, but it gives him a path to standalone fantasy value. Aaron Jones isn’t going away, but with J.J. McCarthy taking over at quarterback and Justin Jefferson banged up, the Vikings will likely look for balance and rhythm in their backfield to take pressure off the rookie. O’Connell even hinted at ways to get both backs on the field together.
For fantasy purposes, Jones still has the edge, but Mason is a legit threat to be more than just a handcuff. If Minnesota’s offensive line lives up to expectations, both backs could flirt with flex value every week.
OTHER FANTASY FOOTBALL NEWS & NOTES:
- Malik Nabers left Tuesday’s training camp practice with an apparent shoulder injury. Stay tuned for updates.
- Jahmyr Gibbs is “usually the first back on the field with the starters.” This differed from last season, when David Montgomery typically led the early-down snaps as the team’s starting running back.
- RJ Harvey and JK Dobbins have “routinely” ran with the first-team offense in training camp. This committee was expected, and we are targeting both in redraft and best ball.
- RSJ favorite, Jacory Croskey-Merritt, saw 1st team reps for the first time in Commanders’ camp.
- Bucs OC Josh Grizzard said Emeka Egbuka has exceeded expectations in terms of communication, picking up the playbook, and running crisp routes.
- Isaiah Likely rolled his ankle and could be out “a few weeks,” per John Harbaugh.
- Sean Payton on RJ Harvey: “He had a run today that was something. We all turned and looked at each other.” “He’s doing exceptional.”
- Oft-injured Packers RB MarShawn Lloyd left Monday’s training camp practice with a non-contact injury. Emanuel Wilson would be Josh Jacobs’ RB2 if Lloyd misses time.
- Sean Tucker got some work today, and Todd Bowles said that his aggression and low center of gravity make him an ideal back, per River Wells.
