Former Minnesots Vikings QB listed to have a ‘friendly deal’ with new team

Sam Darnold surprised everyone when he led the Vikings to a 14-3 season and had them in contention for the NFC North and the number one seed.

ESPN insider Dan Graziano recently made a list of both team and player-friendly contracts, and Darnold’s new deal made the cut. The former top draft pick for the Jets had a tumultuous career, but he earned his massive deal with the Seahawks, which was for three years and $100.5 million. As it turns out, though, the deal may not be as expensive as advertised.

Graziano explains, “Darnold was an unrestricted free agent this offseason, when most teams believed there weren’t many great quarterback options. So for Seattle to get him on this deal is impressive, especially after he threw 35 touchdown passes last season with the Vikings. The Seahawks have a longstanding policy of not guaranteeing any money in veteran contracts outside of the first year. So Darnold’s full guarantee consists of his $32 million signing bonus, his $5.3 million 2025 salary and his $200,000 workout bonus. That’s it. If the Seahawks want to walk away after this season, they’d owe him no more than that $37.5 million. . .”

If the Seahawks ever decide to move on, and Kevin O’Connell remains coaching the Vikings, we can expect reunion rumors to emerge almost immediately. If the team can be expected to be attached to Aaron Rodgers and every other veteran quarterback, even with J.J. McCarthy waiting in the wings, Darnold will always be around.

For now, though, Vikings fans can just wait for to see how Darnold looks in a Seahawks uniform in Week 13 when they face off.
