OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Sophomore infielder Jake Schaffner has been named a semifinalist for the 2025 Brooks Wallace Award, the College Baseball Foundation announced on Wednesday.
The award honors the nation’s top shortstop and will be presented by the College Baseball Foundation later this year. It is named for former Texas Tech shortstop Brooks Wallace, who played for the Red Raiders from 1977 to 1980. Wallace died of leukemia at the age of 27.
The semifinalists were identified based on their combined offensive and defensive performances from this season. Finalists for the Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Award will be announced on June 4, with the 2025 winner to be announced at a date to be finalized later that month.
Schaffner is one of 30 semifinalists and is one of two players in the Summit League named to the list, joining Carter Sintek from South Dakota State.
Schaffner has registered a team-best .387 batting average, .490 slugging percentage and .445 on-base percentage this season. He also leads the Summit League with 79 hits and a team-best 45 runs. His 79 hits rank 35th in the nation and are tied for fourth on the Bison single-season list. The Janesville, Wis., native also ranks second in the Summit League with 17 stolen bases and boasts a .978 fielding percentage.
