VERMILLION, S.D. – The North Dakota State men’s track & field team opened competition at the Summit League Outdoor Championships on Thursday by extending its dominant run in the javelin at the conference meet.
Sam Roller (Thompson, N.D.) captured the Summit League javelin title, throwing a lifetime-best 228-0 (69.50m) for the win. He moved up to No. 6 all-time at NDSU in the event.
With Roller’s title Thursday, the Bison men have now won 13 consecutive Summit League titles in the javelin.
The Bison men placed 1-3-4 in the javelin, with three North Dakota natives all registering personal-bests. Behind Roller, sophomore Peter Dryburgh placed third at 193-2 (58.89m) and freshman Zach Lilly took fourth at 187-3 (57.07m).
Kaden Pastian was the Summit League runner-up in the hammer throw at 197-3 (60.12m), followed by Jack Packer in fourth and Thomas Huneke in sixth with a significant personal-best of 177-6 (54.12m).
Senior Tyson Mahar scored critical team points with a lifetime-best run in the 10,000m, clocking 30:44.86 to place fourth in the meet and rank 10th in NDSU history. Jacob Knodle took fifth in 30:49.36 for the Bison.
Through five events on Day 1 of the Summit League decathlon, Bryce Enerson is in sixth place and Cullen Curl stands eighth.
Carter Elde ran 54.21 in the 400m hurdles prelims to advance to Saturday’s final.
The meet will continue on Friday and Saturday.
