NDSU Baseball Drops Series Opener at St. Thomas, 5-4

ST. PAUL, Minn. – St. Thomas scored four runs in the seventh inning as the North Dakota State baseball team dropped a 5-4 decision in the series opener on Friday afternoon at Koch Diamond.

The Bison (16-29, 12-13 Summit) quickly grabbed a 2-0 lead in the opening inning with an RBI single from Davis Hamilton and an RBI sacrifice fly off the bat of Tate Martin. NDSU then extended its lead to 3-0 in the fourth after Noah Gordon connected on a solo home run.

After the Tommies (25-20, 17-8 Summit) got the board with an RBI ground out in the fifth, Alex Urlaub answered for the Bison with his fourth home run of the season to make the score 4-1 in the sixth. St. Thomas grabbed momentum in the seventh pushing across four runs on five hits and two errors to steal the lead, 5-4, following an RBI single from Max Moris. The Bison weren’t able to get anything going over the final two frames and went on to drop the contest, 5-4.

The Bison posted nine hits as a team with seven different players contributing at least one. Jake Schaffner and Blake Timmons each posted two hits with one run.

Nolan Johnson (4-5) made the start on the mound with two strikeouts and no walks over 6.1 innings. He held the Tommies hitless through the first three frames. Danny Lachenmayer finished out the final 1.1 innings with one strikeout.

NDSU will continue its series with St. Thomas tomorrow. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
