Powell began his college career as a walk-on at the University of Washington, eventually earning a scholarship and becoming a key contributor in the Huskies’ secondary. Powell played high school football at O’Dea High School in Seattle, Washington and received offers from Ivy League schools like Columbia and Yale.
After redshirting in 2019 and not appearing in any games during the 2020 season, he played a total of 21 games in 2021 and 2022, registering 54 combined tackles, three pass deflections, and one forced fumble. In his first career start against Cal, Powell had six tackles and a forced fumble.
For the 2023 season, he started 14 games for the Huskies, tying for the team lead with three interceptions and helped Washington reach the College Football Playoff National Championship game. He also recorded a notable 89-yard interception return for a touchdown against Arizona State.
After transferring to Miami for the 2024 season, Powell caught the attention of NFL scouts. Powell recorded 38 tackles, five interceptions, including a 76-yard pick-six against Wake Forest. He also logged six pass breakups, two tackles for loss and one sack. For his performance last season, Powell earned Second-team All-ACC honors.
At 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds, Powell has good size and could potentially add depth to Minnesota’s defensive backfield. His experience playing both cornerback and safety positions provides the Vikings with a flexible option in their secondary. He projects to be a strong safety in the NFL. Powell’s 40-yard dash time of 4.74 seconds (ran at Miami’s Pro Day) was concerning but his ability to track the ball could prove valuable as he fights for a roster spot.
