FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State softball picked up a doubleheader sweep of South Dakota on Saturday to open up the Summit League series, recording back-to-back 3-0 shutout victories.
Senior Savy Williams scattered five hits and a walk with two strikeouts in game one to record her second shutout of the season, while Piper Reed allowed just four hits and two walks with three strikeouts for her first career shutout.
The Bison (18-27, 5-9 Summit League) offense produced a pair of three-run fifth innings on the day to defeat the Coyotes (24-22, 4-10 Summit League). In game one, Bella Dean started the scoring in the fifth with an RBI single up the middle to score Star Cortez. Rylee Henderson then recorded a bases loaded walk before Savannah Henzler batted in Dean on a fielder’s choice.
In game two, Dean again started the scoring, putting the Bison in front with a two-RBI triple to score Chloe Woldruff and Cortez. Henderson then brought in Dean with an RBI double.
The Bison will look to complete the sweep of South Dakota on Sunday with the third and final game of the series. First pitch against the Coyotes is set for noon at Tharaldson Park.
