FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State baseball team scored five runs in the second inning to help pick up the 6-1 win over St. Thomas in the series finale at Newman Outdoor Field on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Bison secured the series and improve to 12-19 (9-5 Summit) on the season. NDSU has won four of the first five series in Summit League play this season. St. Thomas, who leads the league, drops to 17-13 (11-3 Summit) on the season.
After Ben Vujovich connected on a solo home run in the second, the Bison answered in the bottom half scoring five runs on five hits to open up a 5-1 advantage. Alex Urlaub started the big frame with an RBI double into left field before Evan Gustafson followed it up with a two-run home run to right center. Jake Schaffner kept the momentum going with an RBI triple into right field and later capped the inning scoring on an RBI fielder’s choice. Colten Becker then extended the lead to 6-1 in the third with an RBI single up the middle. The Bison went on to hold off the Tommies the rest of the way as both teams battled through six scoreless frames to close the 6-1 victory.
NDSU totaled 10 hits as a team with eight different players contributing at least one hit. Schaffner and Urlaub each posted two hits with one RBI and one run apiece.
Parker Puetz (1-1) made the start and earned his first win of the season with three strikeouts and no walks over 2.0 innings. Skyler Riedinger also made a relief appearance for the final 2.0 innings with two strikeouts.
NDSU will be back in action at Minnesota on Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
