FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State baseball team bounced back with an 8-6 win over St. Thomas to tie the three-game series on Saturday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field.
The Bison (11-19, 8-5 Summit) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning after Sam Canton blasted a two RBI home run into right field. St. Thomas (17-12, 11-2 Summit) answered back in the fourth inning pushing across six runs on four hits to steal the lead 6-3 following an RBI double off the bat of Joe Roder.
Davis Hamilton responded for the Bison with a three-run home run to right field to lock the contest, 6-6, in the fourth inning. Evan Gustafson kept the momentum going with an RBI single into left field in the fifth to regain the edge, 7-6. Dante Smith then added insurance in the seventh with another RBI single to increase the lead to 8-6. Danny Lachenmayer closed out the final 1.1 innings on the mound retiring all four batters he faced to help secure the 8-6 victory.
The Bison connected on 12 hits as a team with four different players logging multiple hits. Hamilton led the way with three hits on five appearances to go along with three RBI and two runs. Jake Schaffner also went 3-of-4 at the plate with two runs and two stolen bases.
Logan Knight made the start on the mound with two strikeouts over 4.1 innings. Landon Koenig (1-0) earned his first win of the season tossing three strikeouts over 3.1 innings. Lachenmayer picked up his sixth save of the season with two strikeouts and no walks over the final 1.1 innings.
NDSU will conclude its series with St. Thomas tomorrow. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m., at Newman Outdoor Field.
