FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State baseball team came up short in the series opener against St. Thomas, 7-1, on Friday night at Newman Outdoor Field.
The Tommies (17-11, 11-1 Summit) scored the first three runs of the contest after plating two in the opening inning and then Joe Vos extended the lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning with a solo home run to left field. Alex Urlaub answered for the Bison (10-19, 7-5 Summit) with an RBI single down the left line to cut the deficit to 3-1 in the fourth frame.
After St. Thomas added a pair of runs on throwing errors in the fifth and seventh innings, the Bison attempted to rally loading up the bases in the bottom half of the eighth. Noah Gordon connected on leadoff single into right field and Urlaub and Tommy Simon walked, but Gordon was tagged out at home and the Bison left two stranded in the frame. St. Thomas went on to hold off NDSU the rest of the way for the 7-1 win.
The Bison totaled nine hits as a team with Gordon posting a career-best three hits on four appearances.
Nolan Johnson (3-4) picked up the loss with five strikeouts and one walk over 6.0 innings. Skyler Riedinger also appeared 1.0 innings in relief with one strikeout.
NDSU will continue its series with St. Thomas tomorrow. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m., at Newman Outdoor Field.
