Johannes wrestled at North Dakota State from 1984 to 1988 and was inducted into the Bison Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007. He graduated with a 107-30-1 career record, tied for fifth-most wins in NDSU history. He recorded 50 career bonus-point decisions and secured 191 dual points in his NDSU career.
Johannes earned All-American honors all four seasons at the Division II level and captained NDSU to the program’s first NCAA Division II National Championship in 1988. He also qualified twice for the NCAA Division I National Championships in 1987 and 1988, and earned All-American honors in 1988, becoming only the second Five-Time All-American in Bison history.
A 1984 graduate of Rocori High School in Minnesota, Johannes was a three-time state wrestling qualifier with a career record of 99-13. He was also a two-time all-conference football player and a member of the track program, competing in the 100-meter dash, shot put, discus and 4×100-meter relay team.
Following NDSU, Johannes was an International Greco-Roman wrestling standout. He was a member of the U.S. national team from 1992-96, including serving as an alternate for the 1996 U.S. Olympic Greco-Roman team after a fourth-place finish at the Olympic Trials. He also earned a bronze medal while competing with USA Wrestling in Cuba and the USSR in 1990.
Johannes started Foothills Consulting Group, an IT staffing agency in Southern California, in 2004, and expanded with a Boston office in 2007. He sold the group in 2022 and has served as an IT consultant since transitioning from Foothills Consulting.
