FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State softball dropped both games of a doubleheader to Omaha on Saturday, falling 4-0 and 8-1 in Summit League action at Tharaldson Park.
The Bison were held scoreless in game one, as Maddia Groff was perfect into the fourth inning and held NDSU to just three hits in six innings. Omaha took the lead with a two-run home run from Rylinn Groff in the third and added two more runs on a home run from Haley Wilwerding in the fifth.
Star Cortez recorded the first Bison hit in the fourth. Jessica Delatorre and Chloe Woldruff had back-to-back singles to start the fifth, but the Bison were unable to get a run across. Savy Williams picked up the loss in the circle in game one, allowing four runs on nine hits with one strikeout.
In game two, Omaha capitalized on a passed ball to take the lead in the top of the first and never trailed. The Mavericks would add to the lead in the fourth, scoring four more runs, before one in the fifth to go up 6-0.
Chloe Woldruff hit her first home run of the season and third of her career in the fifth inning for the only Bison run of the day. Omaha would answer back with a two-run home run in the seventh for the final runs of the day.
Cortez finished with two of NDSU’s five hits in the game, while Bella Dean and Zoe King also had hits. Piper Reed picked up the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, in 3.1 innings of work.
North Dakota State and Omaha will wrap up the series on Sunday, with the third and final game set for a noon start from Tharaldson Park.
