GREELEY, Colo. – The North Dakota State baseball team scored eight runs over the final three innings to pick up the 11-8 win in the series finale over Northern Colorado on Sunday afternoon at Jackson Field.
With the victory, the Bison improve to 6-16 (4-2 Summit) on the season and win their second series in Summit League play. Northern Colorado drops to 8-15 (3-3 Summit) on the season.
After Northern Colorado built a 6-3 advantage through six compete innings, the Bison erupted for four runs on four hits in the seventh to regain the lead, 7-6. Dante Smith started the inning with an RBI single before Noah Gordon blasted a three-run home run to finish out the big frame.
The Bison continued to apply pressure pushing across three more runs on three hits in the eighth to increase their lead to 10-6. Sam Canton notched an RBI single and then later scored on an error. Evan Gustafson finished out the frame with an RBI single to make the score 10-6. Canton then added some insurance for the Bison, who scored in each of the last five innings, with an RBI double into center field to extend the lead to 11-6 in the ninth. The Bears attempted to rally pushing across two runs in the bottom half, but Danny Lachenmayer closed out the final two outs with back-to-back strikeouts to seal the 11-8 victory.
The Bison totaled 15 hits as a team with four different players logging multiple hits. Smith led the way going 4-of-4 at the plate with one RBI and two stolen bases. He narrowly missed the cycle after posting a double in the first, triple in the fifth and singles in the third and sixth innings.
Garrett Shupe made the start on the mound tossing three strikeouts over 3.2 innings, while Skyler Riedinger (2-0) earned the win with three strikeouts and no walks over 2.2 innings. Lachenmayer also picked up his second save of the season with two strikeouts in the ninth.
NDSU will be back in action hosting South Dakota State on Friday. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m., at Newman Outdoor Field.
