SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The third-seeded North Dakota State women’s basketball team fell short against sixth-seeded Kansas City, 68-58, in the quarterfinal round of the Summit League Championship on Friday afternoon at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center.
Kansas City (12-20, 7-9 Summit) quickly ran out to a double-digit lead, 14-2, at the 6:26 mark of the opening quarter with a layup from Elauni Bennett. The Roos then outscored the Bison (19-11, 11-5 Summit), 12-3, in the second quarter to push their lead to 39-18 at the half.
Kansas City continued to surge into the third quarter opening up its largest lead of the game, 44-23, with layup from Bennett with 6:28 on the clock. NDSU, who outscored the Roos, 40-29, in the second half, cut the edge down to single digits with six straight points capped off by a layout from Claire Stern to make the score 56-47 with 4:33 to go. However, Kansas City held off NDSU the rest of the way to secure the 68-58 win.
Molly Lenz paced the Bison with a team-best 14 points, while Marisa Frost contributed 12 points with four rebounds and three assists. Avery Koenen also reached double digits in scoring with 10 points and seven rebounds.
As a team, the Bison shot 36.5 percent (23-63) from the field and 40.0 percent (8-20) from the free throw line. NDSU scored 36 points in the paint and the bench netted 21 points.
