GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Avery Koenen netted a career-high 29 points as the North Dakota State women’s basketball team came up short at North Dakota, 65-60, on Saturday night at Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
Koenen reached the 20-point plateau for the fifth time this season with a career-best 29 points on 12-of-17 shooting from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. She also hauled in a game-high and season-best 14 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Abby Krzewinski posted double digits in scoring with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting from three.
As a team, NDSU (16-9, 8-4 Summit) shot 41.1 percent (23-56) from the field and 64.3 percent (9-14) from the free throw line. The Bison also grabbed 36 rebounds in comparison to the Fighting Hawks’ 28.
The Bison led for just over 26 minutes in total as both teams battled through eight lead changes and eight tie scores. After Koenen hit a pair of free throws to lock the contest, 57-57, with 2:15 to play, North Dakota (9-16, 4-8 Summit) put together a 6-1 run to open up a 63-58 edge with a free throw from Kiera Pemberton with 12 seconds to play. The Fighting Hawks went on to hold off the Bison the rest of the way for the 65-60 win.
NDSU will be back in action at Denver on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. CT
