MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – North Dakota State softball picked up a split on day two at the Charleston Invitational, winning in a 2-1 walk off against Fordham before falling to No. 17 Virginia Tech 9-0 at Patriots Point.
Savannah Henzler was a catalyst for the Bison in game one against Fordham, going 2-for-2 and leading to both runs. The freshman gave the Bison the lead in the second inning, batting in Jasmyn Yessian with an RBI single to right field for her first collegiate hit and RBI.
After Fordham equalized in the fourth inning, the game remained scoreless into the bottom of the seventh when Henzler led off the inning with a single to center. Ella Claus would pinch run for Henzler and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Then freshman Jessica Delatorre recorded her first career hit and RBI as she recorded a pinch hit double to score Claus and give the Bison the win.
Savy Williams picked up the win with four scoreless innings in relief, allowing just one hit with a strikeout and no walks. Williams inherited two baserunners in the fourth and recorded a groundout and a double play to get out of the jam and keep the game level at 1-1.
Madison Wihlm tossed the first three innings, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts in a no decision. Zoe King joined Henzler with a 2-for-2 game at the plate. Chloe Woldruff and Star Cortez rounded out the seven hits for the Bison.
In game two, the Hokies jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first and never looked back, shutting out the Bison for the second time in two days. They would add three runs in the second and another in the fifth. Cortez, Bella Dean and King recorded the three hits for the Bison.
The Bison will wrap up the opening weekend on Sunday with a second game against Fordham. First pitch against the Rams is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. CT from Patriots Point.
