Rams Matthew Stafford, Kyren Williams improvised touchdown vs Vikings

One of the key plays in the Los Angeles Rams’ playoff victory over the Minnesota Vikings was a five-yard touchdown pass from Matthew Stafford to Kyren Williams.

Sean McVay received credit from one analyst, ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky, for creative play design. Orlovsky was a training camp quarterback for the Rams during McVay’s first season with the team in 2017.

But legendary Rams quarterback Kurt Warner offered a different take on the play. He says that after the game Williams admitted he wasn’t supposed to be running a route. Instead, the savvy running back saw an opportunity and leaked out of the backfield to an open space in the end zone. Moments later, Stafford found him for the touchdown:

Kyren told us in interview after the game that he wasn’t supposed to do that… just leaked out bc it was open and MS found him????

This play gave Los Angeles an early 7-0 lead in which they never looked back. The Rams led 24-3 at half time before coasting to a final score of 27-9.

LA advances to the divisional round of the playoffs where they will travel to take on the Philadelphia Eagles at noon pacific time on Sunday.

Can the Rams keep the momentum going versus Philly?
