NDSU Wrestling Places Six at Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – North Dakota State wrestling finished with six placers at the Southern Scuffle on Sunday, led by Max Petersen, who took second overall. The Bison finished fifth overall out of 23 teams in the field.
 
Petersen started the day with a victory in the 157 semifinals over Army’s Dakota Morris, winning 11-5 to advance to the finals, where he faced Brown’s Blake Saito. In the final, Petersen took the lead with a takedown in the first. After two escapes and a point off of a technical violation to tie the dual, Saito scored a takedown let in the second to wrap the scoring in the match.
 
Kyle Burwick also began the day in the semifinals, but fell to #6 Nasir Bailey of Little Rock, 8-5. Burwick then reached the 133 third-place match with a sin over #26 TK Davis of Gardner Webb, pinning him in the first period at 1:46. In the third-place match, Burwick fell in sudden victory to #13 Ethan Oakley of North Carolina, 4-1.
 
Boeden Greenley and Aidan Brenot also reached their third-place matches on Sunday. Greenley started off with an upset of #28 Domonic Baker of Campbell, before another win over Chattanooga’s Jackson Hurst in the 164 consolation semis. In the third-place match, Greenley fell to #32 Tate Picklo for the second time at the event to take fourth.
 
Brenot opened his day with a win over Army’s Jake Gilfoil, before a major decision upset, taking down #25 TJ Stewart of Virginia Tech, winning 9-1 to reach the 184 third-place match. Brenot also took fourth, falling to #22 DJ Parker of Oklahoma in his final match.
 
Gabriel Schumm opened up the day with a pin of Virginia’s Nick Sanko to reach the 157 consolation semis, but fell on a tiebreaker in the next match and then dropped the fifth-place match to take sixth overall.
 
Devin Wasley dropped his opening match of the day to fall to the 174 seventh-place match. However, Wasley took seventh with a 2-1 win to wrap up his event, defeating Virginia Tech’s Ty Finn.
