The Minnesota Vikings arguably have one of the biggest offseason decisions to make regarding their quarterback position. Sam Darnold has effectively led the team to an 11-2 record, but is a free agent after the season. Then they have JJ McCarthy, but he will be returning off a torn meniscus injury. This creates some uncertainty when it comes to who will be the quarterback in 2025.
For the Vikings, their championship window is now, and while McCarthy is talented, missing his entire rookie season will cause him to have to start developing next season, and with that comes “rookie” errors. With Darnold he knows how to run the system already and wouldn’t have that adjustment period, making Darnold the ideal candidate to go with while the Vikings are still among the best teams in the NFC. On the flip side, this should lead to the Vikings trading McCarthy.

If that ends up being the case, the New York Giants are the ideal team. With the release of Daniel Jones, the current starting quarterback for the Giants is Drew Lock, and it hasn’t led to any success as they still sit at 2-11. For Brian Daboll his job is starting to be on the hot seat, and while the NFL Draft would help them get a quarterback, all the quarterbacks in this class come with needing more time to develop, and Daboll doesn’t have time to waste.
When McCarthy was coming out of Michigan in last year’s draft, he was arguably the most pro-ready quarterback. McCarthy finished college with 6231 yards and 48 touchdowns over 481 completions with just 11 interceptions during that time. McCarthy reads defenses well and is able to anticipate throws extremely well, navigate the pocket the extend plays, and throw on the run outside of the pocket as well. McCarthy has great leadership skills, and for a Giants team that needs to get back on track, those characteristics will help advance the team.
